Part III: Treatment, Rehabilitation and Ongoing Care
This section explains the particular treatment, rehabilitation and ongoing care needs for women with disabilities who have breast cancer. It discusses why clinicians need to resist making clinical decisions based on their own assumptions about a patient's abilities and quality of life, as well as the importance of presenting all treatment options to women with disabilities so they can choose the treatment best suited to their needs. Also included is a discussion of informed consent. In addition, this section presents detailed information on how breast cancer treatments may worsen a woman's existing disability-and how early and aggressive physical and/or occupational therapy can help lessen those effects. The section concludes with a discussion of how to create a follow-up care plan that meets the needs of women with disabilities.
