Communicating Using Interpreters and Communication Aids
The second section of the Communication module provides a tutorial on communicating with people whose disability affects the exchange of information during the physician visit. Specific disabilities covered include blindness and low vision, cognitive disabilities, speech and language disorders, and deafness. Each section begins by describing how the disability can affect communication and follows with a description of methods and technologies that can be used to communicate more effectively. For example, the use of technology that makes written text accessible to people who are blind and the use of sign language interpreters who make the spoken word accessible to individuals who are deaf are both explained. Topics also include the risks of using nonqualified interpreters, implications for patient safety, tips for optimal communication, and legal requirements. The presentation ends with a step-by-step approach to providing accessible communication in the physician's office.
